If you’ve the Swiffer style dusters, you may have wished there was a way to have reusable inserts instead of the “one and done” refills. Today we are going to show you how to make your own duster refills that can be used, washed and used over and over again.

How to Make Your Own DIY Swiffer Duster Refills

To make this easy sewing project, you will need a sewing machine as well as the following supplies.

Duster Refill Supplies

  • ¼ yard of flannel fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Matching thread
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Sewing pins or clips
  • Standard sewing scissors
  • Pinking shears
  • Cutting mat and ruler, measuring tape or ruler

This is a beginner level sewing project and takes about 20-30 minutes. The cost to make this is $2.79 per refill. This is based on purchasing the flannel at JoAnn’s at $7.99 with a 30% sale which they have frequently.

To get started on your DIY Reusable Swiffer Duster Refills, you will want to cut the following pieces from your fabric:

  • (2) 5” x 7”
  • (2) 4 ½” x 7”
  • (2) 4” x 7”
  • (2) 3 ½” x 7”

With wrong sides facing each other, place the two 5” x 7” pieces together. Use a fabric marker and ruler to draw a line down the center.

Next, draw a line that is ¾” on either side of the center line. Pin the fabric into place and sew a straight stitch down each of the marked lines.

This step will help you form the pockets your duster handle will slide into.

Place your 5” x 7” piece of flannel on your work surface and center one of the 4 ½” x 7” pieces on top.

Next, center one of the 4” x 7” inch pieces on top of that. Next, you will want to center one of the 3 ½”x 7” pieces on top of that. Flip and repeat this with the remaining pieces, largest to smallest.

Using the fabric marker, draw a line down the center of your stack. Pin it into place and sew a straight stitch down through all the layers on the marked line.

Next, you will want to use your fabric marker, and draw a line that is ¾” on either side of the center stitch you just made. This is your guide that you don’t want to cut into during the next couple steps.

This step is optional, but it can be helpful when making this project. Using your fabric marker, mark at ½” increments across each side.

You can feel there are two layers to the duster. Lift the “top” layer and you will see where you stitched your 3 lines in Step 4.

Using your pinking shears, carefully cut ½” slits on each side, just shy of the stitched lines on either side.

To keep your fabric from fraying when you wash it, you will cut on the bias or on a 45-degree angle to the selvage edge.

When using a cutting mat, you will already have bias lines marked for you to make this easier to follow.

Now you will need to do the same thing with the rest of the layers. Be sure to be careful not to cut through the center line that you stitched.

Your DIY Swiffer duster refills sewing project is complete. Insert the duster handle into the pockets you have created and use it for cleaning wherever you need it.

Using your hands, fluff up the slits in the fabric that you cut, and you are ready to use your easy reusable duster cloth!

When your reusable dusting cloth gets dirty, just toss in with your regular laundry. It can be washed and dried over and over again.

This DIY duster refill can also be used without a handle! It works great as a dusting cloth, too.
